You know the way with PC games, like real time games, when you make an arse of things you can go back to the point of your last save and everything’s ok. I mean, all the mistakes you made, it’s like they never happened. You can probably isolate one particular blunder, a moment of bad judgement, which was definitely where it went wrong. So you go back to a saved version, start from there, and turn left where formerly you turned right.

I am hoping to do that for real. One night, I'm really out of it, I come to on the floor of a bedsit in the mid 70s, and the whole of my adult life has been a late adolescence drug induced dream. "Oh wow," I'd think. That awareness of a colossal dream experience, only dimly remembered.

What I've been thinking is, a way to get the best from Sally D. I learned a lot from my stay in the Maghreb about shisha pipe use. The experiment will be to use Sally with the pipe in the place of tobacco, (it's reasonable to suspect that the apple flavoured mollasses soaked tobacco is for public show only, and that other herbs are smoked in private).

Neat Sally might be too much. Consider mixing it with st john's wort, common sage, and lemon balm.

This is a question I'm often asked. And here's a reply I'm going to standardize:

No, I don't. You're not the first to ask this, and my response is always the same: Do you KNOW what difference it makes? The leaves of this plant will do what you would expect from them.

It seems to change subtly depending on its environment. For example, I grow some plants in my home, and others in the greenhouse at my allotment. They all come from the same 'mother' plant, which I got several years ago. The greenhouse plants (the one in eBay is one of them) are different to the houseplants: their leaves are twice the size, and I find them to be twice as potent.

This changeability of the plant makes me think that it's environment rather than parentage which matters.

In my late teens and early twenties I worked in the ship-repair industry, for a contracting firm that worked mostly on the Tyne, but sometimes we worked away. So, one time I was down in Avonmouth dockyard, near Bristol, for a few weeks. We had digs in a "hotel" near the dock. As you do, I found a decent(ish) pub to call my local for the time I was there.

Anyway, in this pub I got talking to another away-from-home worker, a Cardiff bloke. He was in his forties. We weren't exactly friends, but we had a few conversations.

One night, when he wasn't there, I'd gotten talking to a local lad, Polo, and when the scrumpy was starting to kick in he said, "Your mate Taffy's a funny bloke."

Well, I said, he's not exactly my mate; but how do you mean?

"He's into old women."

So fucking what? Loads of blokes are into older women. Fucking oedipus rex, isn't it? Fucking Jocaster. Freud... the wanker. (I'd had a couple of those scrumpies myself by now).

"No! Not older women. Fucking OLD women!"

I took this with a pinch of salt.

A week or so later, I was in this pub again, playing pool. When the company's dull, your eye's always half on the door for a familiar face, somebody with some conversation. And so it was I saw this lady come in, blinking, looking about her uncertainly... And then my "mate" Taff followed directly behind, found her a seat, went to the bar and got his pint and a port and lemon for the girlfriend.

She was old. Really old. In the environment of that pub, she was just really old. She must have been in her mid 80s. A shabby grey coat. A shabby brown dress, a confused look, a queer smell about her.

She and Taff had three or four drinks really quite quickly, and then left together. You know how it is, especially when you're young and full of yourself, and you're leaving the pub with someone and your whole body language says, "Ha ha, losers - we're away for a shag!" Well that's how Taff and his lassie left that pub, with a twinkle in their eyes.

Polo was triumphant, the scrumpy-addled bastard: "See! A different one every week!"

He was right. A succession of elderly, rather confused women. I avoided Taff, so couldn't ask him what the deal was. Where did they come from? How was it for them?

Fannying around on flickr, and thinking about expensive cameras, I searched for D2X tags. This camera will cost more than $4000. This photo is ok, and so is the "Rust" one below. Get that, I said they're OK.

So why pay all that? I can understand that a professional would need the camera almost as a badge - it's something which says loud and clear: "I do this for a living. Take me seriously". But an amateur needs a lot of skill to justify spending what amounts to a couple of months' wages for a lot of people.

These little beauties are part of my retirement plan. They will be transplanted to their own pots when they're a year old, next spring. At some time between three and ten years after that, they will produce little peyote plants from the roots.

These can then either be used medicinally or transplanted to grow up themselves.

This is a very long term project.

The first time I’ve chewed any leaves in months.  Four or five rehydrated, and two big fresh ones.

As I chewed I felt I wasn’t making as much saliva as usual.  And then that I would give up for the night, it wasn’t working.  There were hints of the customary silvery lights, and the curves, but no cartoon cats.

A spirit of antagonism: a teenage lass goading, carping, egging on, teasing….  This was part of the swinging motion which is also usual.   My sense of hearing was acute, and as before my neighbour cursing at the television was a distraction.

Soon a woman with a sunken mouth, almost as if she had false teeth, though that wasn’t the reason.  She was familiar, of course…

I was waiting for the pull, almost seeking it, and it came more than once but seemed to lead down blind alleys.  At last I glimpsed Korky.

“Old pal.  Soup.”  The absurd refrain.  “Opal… Soup”?  And the silvery light, flowing like mercury,  but female parts, and from silver to fleshy pink, opening out, almost pouring, and the refrain… “Opal…”  I was asking what it meant.

An Irish voice, reasonable; resolution.  The girlish catcalling showed a divided self: the way ahead was unity and kindness.

Coming back I felt torpid, heavy.  Nearly fifty minutes had passed; it had felt like five.  I washed my mouth with brandy, which was a good thing.

The Scotsman, of all newspapers, has an interesting article about the MM ban in Britain. You see, before the ban, people like my friend in the pub could buy growing kits in a shop or over the internet, costing a tenner or so, and grow the 'shrooms on their bedroom windowsill: no tramping around the countryside in cow's shit getting shot by farmers, or handing over money to scary looking guys in pubs. Useless wasters would learn all about the life cycle of fungi. People might gain new perceptions of their consciousness and the universe.

Not anymore.

These figures from the British government are interesting, showing mental or behavioural disorders by reference to the substances that caused them. As you'd guess, booze causes far and away the most problems, about 11,000 a year. Smack's next with 3000. Coke, pharmaceuticals and cannabis cause a few hundred problems; stimulants a few hundred too. Hallucinogens only 80. That's far less than 1% of the trouble caused by drink, yet nobody's seriously talking about making Bacardi Breezers a Class A drug, for possession of which they'll lock you up.

The British government say that they were closing a loophole in making fresh psilocybin mushrooms a class A drug, that previously there had been some judicial confsion surrounding the definition of 'product' in the earlier legislation, and that the new law was merely clarifying the situation.

Strange as it might seem, I think they're actually telling the truth: mushies were always an uncertain matter in UK anti-drug laws, and it would seem necessary to the legal and bureaucratically minded to tidy up the situation.
Although that appears to make sense, anyone who knows the crack will know that it's utterly fucking absurd to make possession of something which grows freely in parks and fields illegal. The same logic can be applied to Cannabis, even more so, because it's a really beneficial herb.

Why? I'm always asking myself, and others, and others ask me: Why? Some say it's social control, but that doesn't wash: booze is legal and that's a drug sure to make you misbehave and sleep in for work.

I saw that M & M man in the bar last night: he looked a bit the worse for wear. I bought us both a beer and we went out into the garden, by the river. He’d finished off the last of his mushies the night before. Just before bed, boiled them up with milk and made Horlix; a shot of Canadian whisky. The idea was to have interesting dreams, but the night was more interesting than he’d intended.

“I went to bed and nodded off, then woke after half an our or so. My eye’s were streaming and I was sweating. I was in a whole new situation so far as sense and perception were. It was very trippy, psychedelic, like the LSD trips of the 60s I’ve read about. Moving colours and shapes, whorls, webs, structures.

“There was quite a bit of physical discomfort; my stomach felt bloated. I went to the bathroom, and it felt really trippy in there, with overtones of being in the bathroom of a house on a tropical island. I tried to throw up and take a shit, but nothing happened. Back to bed again and then the fun really started.

“I was drifting in and out of sleep. The theme of the night was my long dead Grandmother – she died nearly 40 years ago. I swung between intense memories of grief at her death, and happy memories of visiting her and Granda, reading my comics, recollecting the house they lived in, the hallway which fascinated me because there were so many potential visitors passing through it.

Maybe I’ve never before grieved properly for any of my grandparents, I was too young. Last night was hard work, grief is, but it feels now like a release. I was crying a lot; I was five years old for much of the night, but I could stand outside that too and marvel at the psycho-therapuetic nature of the mushies.

There was more: other memories of childhood. That wonderment that Wordsworth and Clare write about.

“Feel fucked today mind. Like a real psychonaught, exhausted after a difficult journey through long buried memory..." He looked at the river going by, the wee clouds of midgies. "The sub theme, aside from Grandma, was Top Cat. Must have ben a big figure in my childhood's imaginative scenery."

I had thought that a salvia tincture would be a simple matter: pack a jar with leaves, top it up with cheap brandy, and leave it on the windowsill for six weeks. Not so, apparently: according to erowid it looks like a right production.

There's this over at the 'shroomery, written by someone with their heart in the right place: this statement goes to the root of the whole matter of s divinorum use:

Salvia divinorum is not something you can use to get "high" with and doesn't produce that kind of effect and should only be used for introspective meditation or for spiritual pursuits to widen the doors of your inner perception, never as a joy ride for the psychedelic effects or shared with anyone who might profane this sacred shamanic plant as some kind of substitute for illicit street drugs.

The instructions for making a tincture aren't easy reading, but very thorough. The laboratory style, though, is at odds with the plant's nature.

There are an awful lot of websites selling a tincture. Which is understandable in the world we seem to inhabit, but nontheless feels like pagan simony.
